ROLES OF PRIVATE CAREGIVER DURING HOSPITALIZATION

During Hospitalization, the major role of a caregiver would be as a support system to the patient as well as the medical team. The caregiver role doesn’t only end in a home care setting but during hospitalization especially the family is not around. The caregiver can play an important role by attending to the immediate need of the client.

In the hospital most of medications and procedures is to be done by the professional nurse, doctors and other medical staff. However, it doesn’t mean that the caregiver does not do anything. Information such as the timeline of events up to the last meal of the patient can be obtain from the caregiver.  The caregiver will be helpful is assisting the patient.

As a caregiver, you are a personal assistant of your patient., Reach out to the medical team especially, the nurses which are your point of contact. They will be Able to give you information about your clients current condition as well as setting proper expectations. The medical staff can give you the proper instructions on how to do your task well for the welfare of your patient.

When it comes to organization,  the care provider will be responsible for the patient’s need.. Whether it is about the documents that the family needs to sign, medications to buy or simply the clothes, toothbrushes, diapers and other personal things that your patient needs.

While you have less responsibilities at the hospital than at home, those responsibilities are crucial and utterly important. The fact that your patient is in the hospital, it only suggests that there’s something wrong with his/her that cannot be solved by mere out of the counter medications at home.

It is very important for the caregiver to be alert and smart. Do not forget to take care of yourself as well. Wear mask and wear gloves if necessary. Always wash your hands and clean yourself when you get home from the hospital. It is very important for you not to get sick while your patient is in the hospital as you will not be allowed to take care of him/her if you caught something contagious like viral diseases such as flu.
